Former vice president Joe Biden made an appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe on Wednesday and tried really hard to look like presidential material.
Things seemed to have been going well until the geographically-challenged frontrunner for the 2020 Democratic Party nomination went off script.
The host, Joe Scarborough, a former congressman from Florida, asked Biden about his position on Social Security and Medicare when Biden said, “And Joe, the Republicans you represented down in Alabama … ,” while slurring his words and smacking his lips.
Scarborough glared and maintained a stone face but stayed in character as a Democratic public relations assistant instead of correcting the obvious mistake.
Investigative reporter Jordan Chariton said Friday the elder statesman is being “saved by slobbering allies in corporate media.”
Biden is notorious for confusing one state with another. On a Saturday campaign stop last year he said, “I love this place. Look, what’s not to like about Vermont in terms of the beauty of it? And what a neat town. This is like a scenic, beautiful town. The mayor’s been a good guy. Everybody has been really friendly. I like Keene a lot.” The only problem is he was not in Vermont, but Keene, New Hampshire.
Biden first captured a Delaware Senate seat at the age of 29, and at the ripe old age of 77 he thinks he has the stamina to win the presidency. When he isn’t lost, he’s busy lashing out at voters and intimidating reporters who ask tough questions.
A tall, heavy set Iowa voter, who confronted him in December for being “too old” and questioned his son Hunter’s role on the board of a controversial Ukrainian natural gas firm, was in for a shock.
“I’m not a Republican,” he said. “I’ve got two problems with you. One, if you’re damn near as old as I am. You’re too old. I’m 83 and I know damn well I don’t have the mental faculties I did.”
“You’re a damn liar, man,” Biden yelled while walking toward him in a confrontational manner. “That’s not true and no one has ever said that,” said Biden while squinting out of drooping eyelids.
An assistant tried to take the microphone away from the heckler but Biden said, “Let it go.”
“Look, the reason I’m running is because I’ve been around a long time and I know more than most people and I can get things done,” Biden said. “And you want to check my shape? Let’s do push-ups together man, let’s run, let’s do whatever you wanna do!” The audience broke out in laughter at the stunned constituent.
“And number two, no one has said my son has done anything wrong and I did not, on any occasion,” he continued, only to be cut off by the man who shouted that he never said Biden was “doing anything wrong.”
“You said I set my son up to work at an oil company!” Biden snarled. “Isn’t that what you said? Get your words straight…!” he yelled.
“I hear it on MSNBC,” the man shot back.
“You don’t hear that on MSNBC,” Biden said confidently while staring the man down. “You did not hear that at all. I’m not gonna get into an argument here.”
The man said contemptuously, “You don’t have any more backbone than Trump does” — as the Biden-friendly audience booed.
“I’m not voting for you,” the man said, returning the microphone.
“Well, I knew you weren’t voting for me, man,” Biden said. “You think I thought you’d stand up and vote for me? You’re too old to vote for me.”
Biden had a scary run-in with a CBS News reporter on the campaign trail on Wednesday in Mason City, Iowa. CBS political correspondent Ed O’Keefe faced off with him about his dust up with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) over his record on Social Security.
Sanders had apologized to Biden on Monday after a supporter slammed the former vice president in a Guardian op-ed, accusing him of having a “big corruption problem.”
“Yesterday, you said you accepted Bernie’s apology, now you’re attacking him. Why are you doing that?” asked O’Keefe. “Why wasn’t this apology enough, Mr. Vice President? Why attack Sanders?”
Biden lunged at O’Keefe with hands out like an old guy scaring kids at Halloween while uncontrollably rambling, “Why, why, why, why, why? You’re getting nervous, man!” as O’Keefe recoiled in horror.
“Calm down, it’s okay,” said Biden while placing his hands on the reporter’s shoulder and chest. “He apologized for saying that I was corrupt. He didn’t say anything about whether or not I was telling the truth about Social Security.”
Biden made a tough guy fist, pounded O’Keefe’s chest and walked away. Many voters are also asking the same question of Biden: “Why?”
