Joe Biden is now a wounded gazelle in the Democratic primary race, according to a jarring new Monmouth University poll released on Monday, and socialists in the party smell blood. They are circling Biden for the kill.
This isn’t any ordinary poll — it is being used to assess qualifiers for the next Democratic primary debate and it shows Biden in free fall, now running neck-and-neck with Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.
Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute, said the race for party nomination has “become volatile.”
Democrats desperately want to unseat President Donald Trump and have been pretty smug, thinking Biden was in a strong position to win. The former vice president is moderate, experienced and has an impressive resume.
If a socialist or far-left leaning candidate becomes the nominee, many party insiders believe the Democrats will be handing the election to Donald Trump.
According to the poll 19 percent of Democratic and Democratic leaning voters think Biden should be the nominee, a decrease of 13 percent compared to Monmouth’s June poll. This was Biden’s worst showing since they began polling voters in January.
Biden has now fallen behind socialist candidate Bernie Sanders and far-left leaning Elizabeth Warren, both polling with 20 percent support.
In fourth place was U.S. Senator from California Kamala Harris with 8 percent, while South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg and U.S. Senator from New Jersey Cory Booker each had 4 percent.
Voters started taking a more harsh view of Biden when he started making several controversial gaffes on the campaign trail. On a Saturday campaign stopped he said effusively, “I love this place. Look, what’s not to like about Vermont in terms of the beauty of it? And what a neat town. This is like a scenic, beautiful town. The mayor’s been a good guy. Everybody has been really friendly. I like Keene a lot.” The only problem is he was not in Vermont, but Keene, New Hampshire.
The Biden campaign pushed back rapidly, telling Fox News, “This poll is an outlier that is contradicted by every measure of the national average.” They also introduced a new advertisement with Biden showing his emotional side, calling health care a ‘personal’ issue for him as voters see footage of his family battling sickness and death.
Party bosses thought they had neutralized all the socialist troublemakers so they couldn’t disrupt carefully laid groundwork to win the elections. Now they are faced with the unthinkable, battling Trump with a socialist.
In the past they would simply rig the primaries to get their chosen candidate, but that could be a very risky strategy after the Hillary Clinton debacle. The open rigging of the nomination process in 2016 using superdelegates created fissures in the base that have not yet mended.
MSNBC national political correspondent Steve Kornaki told news anchor Chris Jansing on Tuesday the poll shows “the floor pretty much falling out” for Biden, especially his support with Democratic voters under 50 years old.
Socialists are positioning themselves to seize the moment. This could be the grand opportunity they have been waiting for since George McGovern, the party’s most liberal presidential candidate, was nominated in 1972. Some strategists are now forcefully urging Biden to exit the race.
Cenk Uygur, host of The Young Turks, said Monday, “I think there is an excellent chance that Biden doesn’t even make it to Iowa. He’s not even in the race when the voting begins, because if this fade continues, we’re in August! He’s gasping for air! He ain’t gonna make it to January! So you think he wants to get humiliated? Come in third, fifth, seventh? No. there is an excellent chance he leaves the race before we have a single vote.”
Fox news political editor Chris Stirewalt also weighed in on Fox News’ Special Report with Bret Baier on Monday.
“If that were the state of this race, Joe Biden will be out of the race before Halloween. He will not persist. If the reality for Joe Biden is that he is fighting for second place, then he is on his way out because his core argument is electability. If he is not the front-runner, he’s the non-runner, and he will have to get out of the race, because what Democrats desperately need is a viable alternative to Warren or Sanders. They gotta have it and they gotta have it now,” said Stirewalt.
Biden hopes his new ad and friendlier polls, will stave off the scavengers in the party who can’t wait to dismember him. He is also throwing the socialists a bone, saying he supports two years of free community college, “cutting in half the cost of four years of college at a state university.”
